The Australian drought – implications for water planning

Dr Hurlimann describes the impact of Australia’s recent drought. A case study of a referendum in Toowoomba is presented. Residents of Toowoomba voted against a plan to provide the city with purified recycled water for drinking purposes. The role of the interest group CADS – ‘Citizens Against Drinking Sewage’ in the referendum is discussed as well as political interference in the scheme. Implications the case of Toowoomba has had for water planning in Australia are discussed.
